Today was the first full day of the New York International Gift Fair at the Jacob Javits Center and, after writing a preview article this week for AMNY, I was excited to check it out in person.
I’ve been to a few shows at the Javits Center before (namely the Auto Show and the Photo Expo) but going to the NYIGF was a totally different experience. Imagine stepping into a mall with 2000+ vendors, but instead of finding the usual trifecta of Gap/Banana Republic/Old Navy stores, you come across thousands of independent designers, artists, and boutiques from all over the world.
Being both a shopping writer and a contemporary design fan, I felt both overwhelmed and completely inspired after tromping around for nearly three hours inside. Luckily (for my wallet) none of the items could be bought on site, so I was able to resist their siren calls and avoid any impulse purchases. Being a member of the press, however, I was allowed to take all the photos I wanted, which was almost as good…

The scene inside the Jacob Javits Center.

Karlsson clocks! I’m a fan.

The Jonathan Adler booth where I found…

These lacquer bath accessories, which I’m obsessed with. They also come in black, hot pink, turquoise, and green. You can buy them online here.

Some people really went all out with their booths!

A pretty chair made with enamel and faux fur from Oly.

Ciao Neo! This was the first NYIGF appearance for the Italian company Neo. All of their fashion accessories are made with a special rubber that’s also used to make scuba diving gear. I really want that knotted handbag!

I’ve liked Yellow Owl Workshop ever since I came across their too-cute-for-words stamps on Delight.com, and I like them even more now that I know the brains (and art) behind the operation is a super-nice San Francisco husband and wife team.
The NYIGF is at the Javits Center through Wednesday, Feb. 3. Definitely go check it out if you’re in town!
